do I need to remove the shift shaft? or is there a way to get it out, and press in a new one, while leaving the shaft in?

I recommend you remove the shaft. If you decide to try removal anyway, I'd order two seals just in case.Ed
To measure is to know.

It has been MANY years since I last did one but, IIRC,
I installed 2 wood screws into the seal and pulled it out.
Then, I used a small tube and a hammer to install the new one.
