Checked the ignition timing with a timing light and found that the timing on 1-4 was slightly different than 2-3. Adjust so they are all exactly lined up with the marks. That reduced the rattling quite a bit.

Then I used my carb tune kit and tweeked the carbs so vacuum is exactly the same on all carbs. They were not that different but not perfect; one bar was about 1/4" lower than the rest. When I did that all rattling had stopped.

Yep. Someone needs to enshrine this in gold lettering somewhere. A good sync cures many ills...

Not sayin' that the rattle has gone away for good but this a huge relief for me because I did quite a bit of work on the old GS over the winter. Installed 850 jugs/pistons, rebuilt a different head and installed it. Potentially good upgrades but also a large opportunity for screw-up...especially with me on the wrenchs LOL.

Anyways I took it for a ride this morning and it finally seems to have it all together. Nice smooth idle and the power that I was hoping for.
