1100? 1150? idle gear starter question

Okay I have been having some problems on my rebuild as you may have noticed from some previous post.
    Here is the run down.....
Rebuilding a 1981 1100 with two engines one almost complete and a parts engine.
    Everything is working accordingly except..........
I have two sets of idle gears and one starter
One idle gear matches my starter and one does not
One idle gear has a finer tooth that engages to the starter
the idle gear with the finer tooth matches my current starter
the other idle gear with the larger teeth does not match my starter
I am assuming both were out of a 81 1100 (apparently not)
When I bolt the stator cover on tight it binds (completely stops) the starter
If I loosen the top of the stator cover...starter turns the bike over but still seems restrictive

another member mentioned in one of my other treads that one set may be from a 1150 and not require the two washers on the idle gear.

How can I identify what I have and what is proper to use??
can I just remove the washers bolt up and go?????
I am not looking for a short cut I just want to make sure I have the right parts in the right configuration.
So for no pics my computer at home will not allow me to up load.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. it is not a electrical issue.

Are you using the Suzuki gasket ?

1150 gear has a different amount of teeth...nothing to do with the shims.
sometimes the shims are not even needed.

Cometic gasket. I was going to order a OEM one if I need to.
Where would I find out how many teeth are which? or does it matter?
How do you know if you need the shims or not.
mine is obviously to tight....but I dont want it too loose.....right??

on more thing to add to my head ache....
I am not really sure what the stator cover is off of either.
I have two different style covers one had the round aluminum tag center with the suzuki S painted on it.
The other has Suzuki casted in to the aluminum.......

          What a mess......

suzuki cast in is an 1150 cover.
trust me...the shims are not important unless there's a huge amount of side play.
what your doing is not complicated....your making it complicated.

You need the CORRECT idler gear for the starter you have. The 1100 & 1150 starters & idler gears are different from each other. PERIOD! Like Terry said, the shims have NOTHING to do with your problem! Ray.

He doesn't say he has shims in there, but he sounds like he's using an 1150 cover on an 1100 if that changes anything. Are the dowel pins the same length?
                  GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES

I do have the shims in and I will be removing them.
I am using the 1100 cover (the one that had the aluminum sticker decal)

Thanks was not trying to make it complicated just put in a ton of hours on it this weekend and was getting burned out.
Thank you for all the replies and help.

covers are covers...changes nothing but appearance.

Thanks again man I appreciate the help.
We put in a little over 20 hours of work on it over the week end and I think my brain was completely fried when I kept coming up with these problems.
