in gear it has about 2-3" of play, the only sound i could hear sounded like the shaft rotating up near the trans case. the bikes blocked in by my car right now so i couldnt see into the hub very well but it wasnt filled enough for it to come out when i took the filler bolt out.

I checked mine- I get about 1.5 inches of play. You probably have to remove clamp on driveshaft boot, slide boot back slightly and see if you got play here from worn out u-joint or whether the play is in hub splines instead.

Riffmaster, where are you? Maybe one of us is close enough to come over and lend an ear, if not a hand.

Not sure if I am the one you were thinking about, but I don't remember anyone else mentioning a broken shaft on a 650.

If it's a broken shaft, you won't be going anywhere.

If a u-joint is loose in the front of the shaft, it's possible that it can make noise, and only on decelleration (depending on just what is loose).

This is what a broken shaft looks like:

Yes, you were the one I was referring to, but I don't like calling people out for fear they might not want the exposure. You are not forgettable, and you came through with pictures to boot. Superstardom for sure.

I am sure you are quite correct that a broken driveshaft would manifest itself in a way that would be readily apparent. However, I wonder what it may have been like just prior to separation, if it would make noises similar to those that were discussed here.

Hopefully, it is the splines or rear unit. I had a 650 spin a gear in the secondary drive, a little more difficult to get to.

If you are replacing the whole rear unit from eBay, then I don't think you will need any gaskets, simply unbolt and replace.

If trying to replace spline hub of unit, then it will need some gaskets and probably other stuff like shims.

I would replace whole unit, if you think it is bad. Here is just one of several available currently on the bay. If they haven't run completely dry, these things are generally bulletproof. They typically don't fail that often. Just remember the 650 is unique, the larger 850, 1000, and 1100 rear units are not the same.
