    quick question

    hey guys is it normal for the bike to lurch forward when going from neutral to first? also yesterday i was having trouble shifting into second every once in a while, it was like hard on my foot to shift.

    How old is your clutch cable. It could just need to be adjusted. Some of the more knowlegable people might have more on your problem.

      your gonna end up with bent shift forks if your not careful.
      adjust your clutch cable.

          What bike do you have? I'm going through the same issue and in fact I think I figured it out (will know tonight). You should have a another cover on top your sprocket cover. Loosen the screw and locknut there about 3 turns, loosen the locknut up by the clutch cable at the handlebar, turn the screw down in the sprocket cover until you meet resistance and tighten the locknut there. Adjust the clutch cable at the top to what the book says (I think mine says about 2-4mm of play).

              Your bike does not have the external adjuster as above. The adjustment is on top of the crankcase, on the right side

              If you suddenly have more free play at the lever, your cable is breaking

                I looked at the hand lever and it looks like i still have about half of the adjuster that i can still pull out to bring in the arm going to the clutch.

                        i appreciate the thought at least, im hoping just bringing out the adjuster will tighten up the arm above the case and bringing it in making the clutch engage better. If not i noticed a bolt on the other side of the arm that i could prob adjust too to make its not grinding when i go into first out of neutral.

                          Do you have a Clymers or a copy of the service manual from the website here?

                            The one off of Cliff's site is for an 82, and the same year 550 doesnt seem to match up to the 850 all that much

                              Cliff will be able to tell you more but he's got an 80 850. I don't think things will have changed much so check out the one on the top of his site.
