    tachometer drive problem

    I have a GS850 i got as a basket case.

The tachometer drive in the cylinder head appears to have a male end.
The cable screws into the tach adapter, and the cable inside appears to have a male end. They obviously dont mate.

Is there supposed to be a little metal female to female adapter in there?

    Picture maybe?

I didn't find anything on the bikebandit fiche.

    Thanks.

If I remember correctly, the drive in the head has a flat blade.
There should be a ferrule on the end of the inner cable with a slot that fits over it.

A new cable is cheap, but don't get it from Bike Bandit, they are the second most-expensive site, after Alpha Sports.

Yeah, that is a possibility, but it's more likely that the ferrule is broken off.

if you get a new cable, you might as well order up a new seal and o-ring for the drive gear too. It's a 5 min job to swap them out. better to replace them now while you're there and thinking about it then have oil leak all over everything.

Nope, but thanks for the link. I think the ferrule fell off. I guess that's another repair i have to make.

good thing the bike was free, with all the repairs i have to make...

No, no, NO. You must adjust your attitude.

Many of the newcomers will recoil in shock when we suggest what will fix their problem, and say "but that costs more than I paid for the bike!"

So, the general idea is supposed to be ... don't do anything that costs more than the purchase price.

I tend to go against that line of thought. My philosophy is "the less I pay for the bike, the better I can afford to get it going".

                  .

I agree. I paid $0 for my 850, and spent about $800 on it. It was worth every penny. Had I spent $500 on it, I would not have been able to get it roadworthy as quickly.
