    And before you ask you have to wind the spring tension up about 2 turns(from memory) then put the knurled thumb screw on.

        Tensioner is back in. All new seals, gasket, and new hex-head SS screws and anti-sieze. Hope I have enough tension on the spring. Also, just to be sure, the knurled knob should spring CLOCKWISE, correct? (wound spring CCW). It would have to, to push the rod forward. Thanks for all the info. Carbs are next!

          Bless us Ed, thanks for putting that link up. I had taken the tensioner off a few weeks ago and after reading both the Clymer and Haynes manuals I still was not convinced I put it back on correctly. I thought I'd have another go at it later. Fortunately my engine is on the bench and I hadn't turned it. After reading Brians "How to" I understand what's going on now and have re-installed it correctly.
