    Sprocket Cover

Wow, so took off the sprocket cover today and discovered a wealth of what I can best describe as mud/goop/grime encrusted in the interior of the cover. I was about to scrape it all out...but found a somewhat spongy material underneath.

Is that 30yrs of grime congealed into some weird mass? Or was the bike built with some kind of foamy material inside of the cover?

I'm likely to get one of those modern sprocket covers anyhow (you know with the drilled holes / exposed slots...).

Anyhow, this is what I found inside the cover...YUCK.

Big hunk of foam to make the chain quieter.

There's sound deadening foam in lots of covers.IIRC yours is one of them.

If I'm to go the route of buying an "exposed" sprocket cover...can I poach one from a particular bike? Do I just need to fabricate my own? Or are there some enterprising folks out there who do cafe racer sprocket covers?

          Got a drill?
(better to use left handed drill bits for this)
