    Ring Positions

    OK I have read around the forum and what everyone says is to keep the rings ~120 degrees apart and the top and middle one around 10:00 and 2:00 O'clock.

    The oil ring is made up of 3 pieces, the spacer and two side rails. Where do you suggest I place the gap on the spacer and two side rails? All the manual says is to not over lap them?

      Upper side rail at about 2 o'clock , spacer at 6 and lower side rail at about 10.

      top ring at 6 and second ring also around 10.

      12 o'clock is the exhaust side of the piston for reference.

            I have the service manual ... There is no diagram like that at least in section 7-36 Piston and rings. The manual I'm looking at is 80-83_GS1100T-LT-EX-1000SZ-EZ-SD-ED-ESD.pdf, are you looking at a different manual or a different section?

                  yup...

                  I looked at that damn manual so many times, I almost memorized certain sections .

                  Sometimes having it in print is also easier than on the 'puter like mine is.

                    Don't get hung up on the ring positions. They don't stay there when the engine is running.

                        Yeah, they don't move much.

                        Two stroke pistons have a pin in the ring groove to stop them from rotating, preventing the ends from snagging on the port windows. Broken rings and scoured bores occur when that happens on race ported engines. .
