Slow to crank cold and has a short noise
78 1000. Just got back from a long trip, bike ran fine. Going to increase the main jet from 95 to 102.5 for the Marving 4 inot 1 but really it's running great, except for this. When I go to start her up in the morning she cranks slowly for 2 or 3 cranks then fires right up but at the same time I heard a metal noise from the block. The noise disappears immediately as she fires and will not reproduce it's self again on following starts. Hard to describe the metal sound, more than a dull clunk that's for sure, more of a higher metal tone..very alarming. Doesn't do it every time but does do it and has me worried. Once the bike has been started at least once from sitting over night every following start it fires immediately, barely needs to crank over once. The valve stem seals need doing but I'm not pushing any blue on throttle acceleration so I didn't think it needed it's rings doing but who knows. Compression is 170, 145,145,145 approx starting at #1 through to #4. She uses about a litre of oil every 1000KMs but I figured that was due to the valve seals. She's not leaking (well not now that I put in the neutral gasket that I had forgot earlier ). Thanks all.Rob

I always check my battery voltage and running voltage when I am having a hard time starting. The noise you hear might be the starter clutch and starter fighting with the engine?
