I too have an oil leak, but where is your leak located exactly?

    Hi all!
I saw the first post that this leak was near the ignition cover.

I have an 82 gs850g and and oil leak that I have seems to be coming from the front part of the bike and down the front levels of the cylinder head.

When i took off the gas tank it revealed a slash in the breather hose. i patched it up until i could get a replacement. Cleaned up the spray on top of the carb covers and down near the spark plugs. I did this when i did an oil change.
When the breather hose arrived i went back, but the leak wasn't coming from the hose, though it was new oil coming out for sure somewhere from just around the spark plugs, dripping on the left side and down the cylinder head.

Is that too where the ignition cover is and could my leak also be a crank seal?
it's not a very big leak, but it is persistent and could be fouling my #3 spark plug.

I'm female doing the work with fellow gearhead friends.
    Thanks bunches!

The ignition cover is on the right-hand side of the bike (as you sit on it). On the left hand side is the stator cover. Scrub it really well and see if you can get it clean, then put some powder on it to really nail it down. When you're riding the wind can whip oil around so there's no telling where it's coming from. It's not unusual to have leaks around the valve cover, particularly around the half-moons under the cam end covers (the shiny round covers).

You could also post a pic... And introduce yourself in the GS Owners forum!

What do you suspect? Care to share?

Chef Bill is a great guy, very helpful and all, but I recommend against loosening any crankcase screws unless absolutely necessary. Doing so can introduce an oil leak from a different place. Not worth the risk unless you can't get the seal in any other way.
