Gs850 rear tire locking up???
I just recently bought an 82 gs850 and now when I try to ride it the rear tire will lock up after moving about 200 feet. The weird part is that after I let it sit it will roll again. Its almost like there is some thing broke in the rear pig. Tranny shifts fine in all gears.Tags: None

You might want to check the rear caliper to see if it's locked up from corrosion.Last edited by Nessism; 08-09-2011, 08:59 AM.Ed

I checked the brake caliper and it's working fine so just for the heck of it I took the pads out so they wouldn't make contact with the rotor and the rear tire will still lock up

I'd remove the rear wheel next and then check the driven spline, wheel bearings, and try shifting though the gears with the engine running while on the center stand. You might want to check for oil in the rear end too.Ed

Welcome to GSR.
Interseting that you just got the bike... and this just starts to happen. .... hum ...
Do check the other post in the link posted above by 7981GS.
That is my vote for what haws happened to your bike.
You will also want to check the hub-spline in the rear wheel (to at least learn about that). But my expereince is that a problem there will more likley cause rear wheel to turn freely (like it was in netural), not lock up.
When we say rear hub (or spline) we are refering to this #15. Pretty much do Have to remove from rear wheel to inspect it.
Will also suggest that you add your model and year in your signature line and put your general location in your prifile. THen both of those show up in every post. (Goto UserCP ....)
850s are great bikes.
Tell us more what you find.
Dave

Well I think I have a major problem. I took the drain out of the secondary drive (that's where the drive shaft goes into?). And it was glittery and it had metal shavings. And there was only about 2 ounces of gear oil in it. Oh and another thing there is a bolt missing that's located on the bottom of the case directly beneath the starter it seems like it might be a drain or something. There was rtv sealant plugging the hole.

Hi,
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
Another reference to the "mystery hole"!
Fill your secondary gear case back up with good synthetic 75w90 gear oil. See: Secondary Gear Oil Change
Hopefully there isn't too much damage. You might want to change it a few times inside of 1000 miles just to clean it out well.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
