I put the bike on a stand to get the rear tire off the ground, i then added new oil to it and i ran it threw all the gear at very low wheel speeds. after that i drained the oil back out of it. the tire never locked up while it was on the stand but the rear wheel had a slight wobble in it while it was on the stand. so i guess if have more problems elsewhere to. so my next question would be is how would i check the internals of the secondary gear case. And what would make the rear tire wobble.
By the way i want to thank everyone for all your help with this project. For the past six years i've been building race cars, so motorcycles are new to me.

Hi,
I just wanted to make sure you knew the difference between the secondary gear oil and the final drive unit oil. They are two separate cases to change/fill with gear oil. The crankcase oil is also separate. It's all documented on my little website.
Forgive me if I state the obvious.
Thank you for your indulgence,

Yes i understand the differences between them, there no bad feeling for stating it though. would you happen to know what would cause the rear wheel to wobble. possibly wheel bearings? but it could be a optical allusion the tires are old and do need to be replaced so it could be the tires. I will check and see for sure if its the wheel when i get a chance to.

And it was glittery and it had metal shavings. And there was only about 2 ounces of gear oil in it. Oh and another thing there is a bolt missing that's located on the bottom of the case directly beneath the starter it seems like it might be a drain or something. There was rtv sealant plugging the hole.Originally posted by Nate12b View PostI put the bike on a stand to get the rear tire off the ground, i then added new oil to it and i ran it threw all the gear at very low wheel speeds. after that i drained the oil back out of it. the tire never locked up while it was on the stand but the rear wheel had a slight wobble in it while it was on the stand. so i guess if have more problems elsewhere to. so my next question would be is how would i check the internals of the secondary gear case. Nate,
Please clarify which unit was it that had only 2oz and had the shiney flakes...
.. the final drive (at rear wheel, maybe called pumpkin by auto guys).
.. the secondary drive (at rear of engine, front of shaft).
The hole you described sounds like the drain hole under the starter motor. But if it is infact the drain for the gear lube (secondary drive)... that is a bbigger problem. That gear lube drain hole will be larger and is threaded for a plug. (and should have a plug, and should have gear lube, and if doesnt have gear lube, something bad can happen, like, ah, gears break and lock up rear wheel.)
Rear wheel wobble. Can you grab the rear wheel and make it slide sideways on the axle? Should not be able to. There should be spacers there on the axle, and they need to be in right place. Can you grab the wheel and make it do the wobble?
When you have the rear wheel off, you can check the bearings.
Even if the rear hub in rear wheel is partly failed or completley failed, I dont think it will make the wheel wobble.
Describe the wobble somemore, and tell us whatelse you find.

You need to find a second hand set of gears OR replace the bearings on the one you have... The bearing is shot if it was locking up !!!!!!

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

From the start of this thread, you said....
"I just recently bought an 82 gs850 and now when I try to ride it the rear tire will lock up after moving about 200 feet. The weird part is that after I let it sit it will roll again. "
Can you explain this more? Were you coasting to a stop when it locked up? And locked up, as like brakes applied, or just sudden drag, any noise?1981 gs650L

The secondary drive was what had only a little oil and had shiny flakes in it. The hole I was talking about was just the drain for the starter. And the tire locked up while I was rolling to a stop, there was no other sounds besides the the rear tire squealing.

Are you deaf to the written words that have been posted over and over?
If you are drowning and someone hands you a rope, do you just HOPE for another rope?
Your bearings are GONE!!!! Clear?

after those comments, i relized why i normally don't get on fourms and ask for help. there were many times i asked how to change the secondary gear but nobody ever said anything. you would rather just say something negative, and act like im a dumb a$$. This will definitly be my last post on this subject.
