Start up after new rings and rebuilt carbs
I am restoring a 1978 gs 750 that sat for 15 years. I had to pull the head and apply direct pressure to the pistons to get it freed up. The pistons and cylinders measured OK, so I had the bores honed and am replacing the rings. I am also rebuilding the carbs. I have been doing some research on engine break in after a ring job. I will need to sync and tune my carbs before I can ride, correct? Will this screw up the break in?Tags: None

What exactly is the concern? Have the Mototune proponents scared you into thinking your engine is going to turn into an oil burning fogging machine if you don't hammer it straight off the first start up? If so, RELAX!!!! Tuning the carbs is fine, just put a fan in front of the engine for obvious reasons. I've never followed the Mototune procedure and all the engines I've rebuilt seal perfectly. I do believe in using lots of throttle, and following an "in town" driving pattern for the first half tank of gas or so. After that, I do some freeway speed roll-ons, using progressively more throttle, higher rpms, and lower gears. By the time the first tank of gas is exhausted, you can pretty much do what ever you want with the engine.Ed
To measure is to know.
