Loose marbles noise in GS 1000 engine

Sounds like detonation? Pinging?
Lean on carburation or timing too advanced.

My GS750 developed a metalic rattle when I started it up this spring.

It turned out to be that the carbs were not synched close enough and the 1-4 ignition timing was not exactly the same as 2-3. Once I fixed those things the rattling stopped.

I opened the left crankcase cover today and while I did not manage to undo the stator bolt ( yet?) the rotor that holds the clutch rollers seems to have an incredible amount of play.

The next difficulty will be to remove the stator
Is it possible to buy the appropriate inertia puller somewhere?

Thanks for the picture, now I know what to look for
I thought an "inertia" type puller was needed but this one seems better as it only relies on the torque you apply to get the needed pulling force.
BTW the diameter is roughly 35 mm.

I got the pulley extractor tool this morning ( size 38*1.5)
After untightening the central bolt that holds the stator in place ( you must leave it on the crankshaft ), I screwed the outer part of the tool in place and then proceeded to tighten the central bolt and the stator came off easily.

The source of the "loose marbles" noise was now obvious: the bolts that hold the one way clutch to the stator were loose and one was broken.

Luckily the one way clutch looked OK apart from that
Tomorrow I'll reassemble the stator and one way clutch with plenty of loctite and all should be well.
I can assure you that this noise really made me go nuts as the bike had been largely rebuilt and the sound really spoiled the looks

Before you reinstall the stator, could you post a couple of pictures of it, please?
From the angle of the first pic it looks pretty toasted, but perhaps it is only the light.

That should be 35mm for the puller I thought - it's got 35 penned on it , was that a typo?

Use red loctite on those bolts when you put it back together - that stops the blighters coming undone.

You are right, it's 35 mm ! Sorry for that
What about using self locking ( ?) nuts behind the longer bolts you can see protuding on the second picture?

loosing my marbles

Just completed this fix using red loctite and adequate torque.
Bolts (x 3) came loose (along with loose marble sound) within 400 miles.
Screw this ... I'm going the WELDING route!

I now confirm that the "loose marble" noise is GONE
The bike rides like a dream and the noise, no the whisper, coming from the engine is similar to a nicely oiled sewing machine
