rear spline wear question
Today I inspected my rear hub splines to find them about half worn through (gold ones with 17,000 miles). I can't find anybody speaking of changing the splines on the drive shaft side, which mine are also worn there too. Do people usually only change the hub splines? The driveshaft side isn't worn as bad but they are still noticeably worn some.Tags: None

You will have to change the entire final drive assembly to fix the drive side spline, or at least that's the easiest way to repair it. All the 850/1000/1100 final drives are the same, other than '83+ 1100 final drives have a taller gear ratio.Ed
To measure is to know.

Rear Spline Question
Which ever replacement you do, make sure to pack the splines with a good EP (extreme pressure) grease. Some bike makers demand a high moly grease for this purpose however I am not convinced that the high moly greases are superior for this purpose to a good EP type drive line grease.
Bike rear drive splines seem to fail for one of two reasons:
1) Lack of grease/sealant which allows fretting corrosion to errode the tooth surfaces.
2) Misalignment due to worn/poorly fitting wheel bearings, bent rear axle or such factors.
Some types of bikes seem to be more susceptable but all seem to do well if the splines are cleaned and re-packed with grease at every tire replacement.
My recently acquired 1979 GS850G has splines which look like new. Much gratitute to the previous owners for looking after maintenance!

The black spline was the best one, used in 79 some 80 ?? The gold colored one was made with a softer metal which caused it to wear faster..

Yeah mine's the gold one. I went all over town looking for moly 60 yesterday with no luck. I did find extreme pressure moly grease. I don't know if this is as good.

a rare outsider and was only built until 1983. Who still has one, it gives her so little.

Usually the soft gold splines act as the sacrificial side and don't wear the splines in the final drive. Hopefully your splines in the final drive will be good for a while.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser
