That links the right one for your bike. You're after the cylinder head cover gasket AKA valve cover gasket - the same for any 76-79 8 valve GS750. The one you purchased is the next gasket down on the engine - a much more involved job to replace that.
Check your valve clearance while you're doing the job (if I didn't say this someone else would have ).1979 GS750E

Maintenance is good. Neglected valves will cause them to burn, and could total the cylinder head too.Ed

Any local suzuki shop should have it?
When I bought my 78 750, the PO gave me a few extra valve gaskets...so I know they make 'em!

Is it just me, or does it look like someone has done some welding around where the cam cover bolt goes into the head?Kevin

Greetings and Salutations!!
Hi Mr. drummered,
You bought an aftermarket head gasket when what you actually needed was a valve cover gasket. Have a look at the valve adjustment tutorial on my little website. If your tach send gear is in the head and not the valve cover, I would suggest getting a Real Gasket valve cover gasket. For parts, see the extensive list of OEM and aftermarket vendor links in your "mega-welcome".
Anyway, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....
Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", "Top 15 Tips For GS Happiness", the Carb Cleanup Series, and the Stator Papers. All of these tasks must be addressed in order to have a safe, reliable machine. This is what NOT to do: Top 10 Newbie Mistakes. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...
Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!

THanks bccap and basscliff! I was able to get the correct gasket from Dillon Bros. site. I also was able to order a new set of front spokes which really needed replacing...does anyone have a walk through on how to install the cylinder head gasket...or being a newb, will I need special tools??? Or would I be best giving it to a mechanic?

I would suspect installing a new head gasket between the top of the engine cylinders and the head would likely be a bit too challenging for your present level of technical development.
however, changing a valve cover gasket has to be one fo the easiest things a novice mechanic can begin the learning process with. Remove the valve cover by undoing all the bolts that hold it on, lift it off, remove the old gasket and clean both mating surfaces, put the new gasket in place, put the valve cover back on, and do all the bolts back up. Done.

It could just be oil and/or grime buildup.

Awesome. I'll give the head gasket a shot. I just started watching Cafe Racer TV and now all I want to do is learn how to turn this 750 into a creation of my own... I'm a drummer not a mechanic but you have to begin somewhere I suppose! thanks for all the advice
