    Clunk!

I was riding along on Sunday, just criusin' around and went from 1st to 2nd then Basketcase gave me a loud CLUNK!. After that in any gear no forward momentum. She rolls fine and I get a good shift feel. Any ideas on some things to look for before I start tearing her down to figure it out?

sounds like your rear wheel spines let go.
remove your back wheel and have a look.
if you think its in the clutch area...pull the cover and have a look.

    1980??
you have a chain drive then?
if so...scratch the rear wheel spline i mentioned and check the front sprocket and nut behind the engine cover on the left rear.

Sorry it's an '82. I fixed my signature to reflect. It's a shaftie.

pull rear wheel and check the splines then.

Yep, I am with Blower Bike on the rear spline, good news is, it is not terminal, nor a huge fix.
Saw one in the parts for sale section.
Let us know what you find when you drop the back wheel.

It is not in the rear end.

Do you have a great road adventure that you would like to share? How about a bike repair gone bad? Put your story here and share it with the rest of us.

Sounds like a rear spline to me as well.

Here's a thread about the one on my GK.

I saw that one before. It might be the same maybe not. The wheel didn't lockup and there was only one CLUNK! We'll see tonight when I pull it apart. I figure I’ll put it in gear and rotate the wheel, if the u-joint behind the engine spins it’s up front if it doesn't it's in the rear.

i'll go with the odd's and say rear spline.
what happened to you is in the 1% range.

My vote is for the soft rear splines they put on the '82 models as well.

What kills me I the bike only has 5600 miles on it. I know it sat for a long time but metal parts in oil shouldn't give just because of age. If it is that where should I go for a new one?

The hub splines in the rear wheel aren't in oil. They're supposed to be greased, and should be checked with every tire change. They're easily removable when you remove the rear wheel. Buy a new set from Z1 Enterprises and it'll be made of the harder metal, Suzuki cheated in '82 and put in what I (and others) consider below standard spline metal. All it takes to wipe them out is some vigorous application of throttle, maybe coupled with a little bit of a clutch "pop" like what you might do if you're trying to take off very quickly or maybe do a burnout. The 1100 will strip those soft brass colored splines very quickly. The new/better ones are silver colored, if you score splines from a 1980 shafty, they're black colored.
Lube the new splines up with Honda Moly lube, you'll be fine.
Just be glad you don't have a 2007 BMW shaft. Their splines strip out regularly and the gears blow up in the pumpkin as well. One of my friends (a real BMW nut) is getting rid of his even though it performed well in the first 40k miles, but every year/long road trip since, something in that area has blown up.

Like Dan said, they live in the rear wheel hub, not in the final drive, and they should be given a good smear of moly grease at every tyre change.
Like I said, here is one up for grabs, the black ones are also made from the better strong material, like the silver ones, the gold ones that went into the '82's were soft like play dough.
They use the same spline right through to the present shafties, so no need to get a soft '82 spline again, replace it with either a later or earlier one. Black or silver....and keep it lubed.
Mine has the earlier silver one and has 375 000km behind it, looks almost like new.

                          Thanks to Nessim

It's definitely in the rear. I put it in first and spun the rear tire. the u-joint doesn't move and you can hear it in the rear. I'll pull it apart and check it out. Thanks for the info and the resources.

Splines are shot. Now to get my hands on a better set.
