gs674 Starter motor delete
I finally have the bike apart for the winter and am working on the engine. is it possible to wire the engine to bypass the starter motor so that it will only start with the kicker? if so how would i go about this?Tags: None

thanks, removing the starter will not have any adverse effects elsewhere right? other than having to kick the motor for a start?

No other consequences, other than a sore leg if it it hard to start.
You can also experiment just a bit before actually removing the starter. Just don't push the button.
There won't be any wiring necessary to "bypass the starter", but you might want to disconnect the starter wire at the solenoid, so you don't accidentally hit the starter button and create a short, just in case the wire is hanging loose under the starter cover.

If you pull the magneto you can remove the starter gear thats on the crankshaft ( which is actually quite large (and may be what is refered to as the starter clutch?)). I believe you have to add a spacer to take up the void. But judging by the size of the gear at 9500 rpm you'd be able to rid quite a bit of rotating mass.Last edited by boontonmike; 11-21-2011, 02:35 PM.1978 GS550 E

Plus, with the starter gone, you can seal up the space where it was and create a flip top easy access lid so you can use it as a road trip oven...
Hot pockets anyone???

Me and my friends where joking about using it as a beer can stash. Unfortunatly the temps would probably destroy or explode the beer. Hot pocket idea sounds like a funny gag to pull on a summer ride.1978 GS550 E

On one of my old jeeps, I used to keep an ammo can strapped to the engine just for hot pockets. Take them out of the plastic , wrap them in two layers of foil, put them in the ammo can at the tail head. .. When you stop on the tail for lunch. .. Hot pockets. ..
