    Carb Diassembly and Clean

I am restoring a 1982 GS750E that was stored the last 16 years. I was advised here to a least clean the carbs. Do I need the $30 each rebuild kits or just some gaskets?

Where can I get just gaskets.

Just spray carb cleaner into the throat?

    All advice welcome.

    Thanks.

Best advise I can give you, and what most other guys will give you is...

Do it right, do it once, or don't do it at all....

    go here

and look for the carb rebuild links

order the O ring kit from here

and get the intake rings as well, with some new shiny allen bolts if you wish

If you follow this, you will not regret it......as for bowl gaskets, you might not even need new ones, be careful on how you take off the old ones

I am sure you will get your BIG Welcome package soon, if you already have not from BassCliff

Do remember your first post back on November 21?

BassCliff responded in post #7 with your "Offcial Mega-Welcome Package". If you didn't bother to read any of it at that time, you should at least bookmark his site for future reference. Most of the collective knowledge of the members on this forum has been stuck in his little library. There are several guides to refurbishing your carbs, one of the best is by member Nessism. If you click on the link I just gave you, scroll down a bit, just below the picture of his bike, look in the right column. The first article is Nessism's rebuild guide.

Not only do you NOT need the rebuild kits, it is highly recommended that you DON'T get them. The parts are often inferior to what's already in your carbs.

Chances are that you will only need a bucket of Berryman's (or Gunk) Carb Cleaner Dip (about $20 at Auto Zone), a set of o-rings from cycleorings.com and maybe some bowl gaskets from Z1 Enterprises or other similar vendor.

Just spraying carb cleaner into the throat will give you clean throats, but that's not where they need to be cleaned. Follow the guide.

      Approximate expenses:
      $20 - Can of "dip"
      $15 - o-rings from cycleorings
      $16 - float bowl gaskets

Add a bit for shipping, where necessary.

Eventually, you will have to synchronize your carbs. The most-recommended tool is the Carbtune, by Morgan. It is about $100 or so, but there are some GSers not too far from you that have one or something similar, so you should be good to look them up until you can get your own.

I would recommend looking at the float needle valves while you are in there. If there are rings around the points, strongly consider replacing them.

You may consider new bowl gaskets as well. Sometimes the old ones are crispy critters. I have used kits just for these. Cheaper than OEM, but not as good.
