    Top end noise

    Been riding and building bikes for 40+ years but first experience with a bike I always wanted. I ave a real clean 81 750l GS.Everything is good except there is a ticking,clater whatever you want to call it in the topend.When I bought the bike I thought it was a timing chain issue then found that they had an automatic chain adjuster. KZ"s haveben my across the frame four bikes for years and that was my assumption.If the tensioner was at it's limit I'd stick an APE adjuste on it and quiet it down.Appears to have brand new gaskets underrocker covers so I suspect someone's been in there. Can I get an APE for this bike or suggestions.Obviously I'll check valve clearance but noisequiets some what when warmand is never a serious clacking.Thoughts.

      It's a GS, they make noise. If the valve clearances are correct and the tensioner is working, run it. Wait, there's one more thing to look at. On that second generation 750 engine with it's crappy oil system, check the cam bearings for damage. If someone were to run the engine a long time on the side stand, the right side cam bearings can get oil starved.

        Could be the adjuster is gummed up after 30 years

          When I put my '77 GS750 back together after converting to 850 it had a very mechanical sounding intermittant clatter at idle that would go away with increased revs.

          I found 2 things that I fixed and the sound went away: I found that ignition timing on 2-3 was not exactly the same as 1-4 and the carbs were not perfectly syched. Once I had those things fixed the engine was quiet at idle.

            Adjust the valves and service the cam chain tensioner. Go through the rest of the maintenance lists below in your "mega-welcome". Then just ride it. These are not quiet engines. A slappy valve is a happy valve.
