Gaskets VS. RTV

For my side covers can I use RTV? Will I run into clearence issues especially with the flywheel cover? It's moch cheeper than OEM gaskets. Thanks guys!

The trouble with RTV is it oozes out of the mating surfaces and little wads of it can clog oil galleys. I'd spend the money on proper gaskets if it were me.

Make your own gaskets - it's easy enough. I wouldn't use RTV. Bit's of it will come off and, if you're unlucky, get stuck in an oilway and your engine will fry.

Where would You reccomend sourcing gasket material? What are the steps to trace? I also have an old tomos that I want to split the case on but would rather make my own gaskets than spend $ for shipping... I thought about it and was thinking about getting a roller of some kind and rolling an ink (maybe even water soluable), and then laying the paper on top and rolling over it to get a print.

Is that a bad idea? How do you guys go about it?

Also, how critical is the thickness of the gasket?

Either your local general car spares store (needs to be the type owned by a guy with a beard) or use a cornflakes packet.

Just use the cases as your template, though it sometimes helps to keep what you can of the old gasket or have a photo on hand to make sure that you are sealing the right bits.

Use lipstick on the case surface and press it onto the paper, Trace the outline with a #2 pencil, then start cutting

If you have a large enough cutting board, just cut the outer perimeter with an Xacto knife while pressing the case down.

Why not order from the local dealer?

Never use RTV - there are much better products available

Scissors are easier to use than a blade. And use a hole punch for the bolt holes.

Gasket material is available at the local auto parts store. Match the old gasket thickness and use a firm material that won't break down in oil.

It's only cheaper until you have to go in and rebuild the engine due to loose pieces of RTV clogging the oil passages.

Besides, it's going to cost you a few bucks for the RTV, it's not all that much more for the proper gaskets.

Of course there's always the bodger's alternative to gaskets that isn't RTV - Red Hermetite. Beware though - all the red Hermetite ever used is still in existence and will surely even survive Armageddon.

LOL be a sure way to get the wife ****ed... You have any idea how much some of that makeup can cost? What a waste of money .... I've already been informed that I am not allowed to use the oven for motorcycle anything - can't wait to tell her her makeup will be needed.

I guess the local dealer is an option - but I like the idea of having some extra material on hand that could be used on any motor.

Okay what is RTV supposed to be used for anyway? In the running tally of RTV uses it's Gaskets 2,452,586,002 and RTV 0.
