Parts shared by GS 700 and GS 1150

I've been looking at a lot of parts fiches lately wondering which parts are shared with which models and it appears to me that the 85 GS 700 and the 84/85 GS1150 share a few parts.
For example: Both use the same valve cover gasket. Does this mean they use the same valve cover? And if so, do they share the same dimensions of the head? And if that is so, then I assume the cylinders would have to be both a bigger bore and longer stroke, but the same outside dimensions? Meaning will a set of 1150 jugs and head fit on a set of 700 crankcases?
Or is that just crazy talk?

Also, the GS 1150 appears to share the same fork lower or outer tubes as my 1984 Katana: 1150 part number - 51130-00A00-15T and Kat part number: 51130-08A00-15T. There is an 8 on the Katana part number where on the 1150 there is an 0, other than that they are the same part number.

Looks like the 1150 and the 700 share the footrest assy's, but they are different on my 84 Katana.

I know it's fairly common for a manufacturer to build a bike using many parts from the parts bin; this obviously saves tooling and production costs. Would that extend to using the bottom half of an engine?

What else is shared with the 85 GS 700 and the 84/85 GS 1150? Curious minds want to know!

You're on the right track. Compare the part numbers on the parts you are wondering about and go from there.
