after disassembling the motor I found this small part on the bench where i was working. What is this? I believe it has something to do with the clutch push rod but am not sure.

I believe that is the neutral locater helper, held up against the shift drum with a spring, accessed from the oil pan side where there is a bolt holding it in.

I agree, but whats happend to the spring and lockbolt?. Swept up the workshop of late?, maybe

Rob, that part is indeed the neutral detent part.
See picture below for all the parts you need for reassembly.
Also Rob just to make sure you know where the hex headed bolt, spring and detent go on the engine; it goes on the top crankcase half under where the carbs would sit. It can be seen at the lower right of this picture.

On the 4 valve 750 and 1100 it goes in from under, near the oil pickup.
