gs750 1977 whirring noise
whirring from left side, had starter motor and stator checked ok. Is this the cam shaft wearing out or a too tight cam chain as it has a auto cam chain tensioner? The whirr follows revs at idle so its not gears

On the left side of the tesioner theres a jam nut and screw arrangement...loosen the jam nut and bottom out the screw. Then turn the screw backm out about 1/3 turn and tighten the jam nut. Thism will at least insure the guide rod isnt impinged. Start the bike and see what happens. The only other thing thats spinning if the bikes not being driven is the rotor. Take a metal rod and put it on the cover and then listen at the other end of the rod..thats a poor mans engine stethescope.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

is it possible to run an engine with the stator cover off cos although it was checked it sounds nearer to that area?

Make sure the keeper plate that holds the stator wire back inside the cover is as tight and flush to the cover as you can get it. I had this happen once on a Gs1000. The rotor was rubbing that keeper plate and made the same noise. No damage done, but check it.
Also keep in mind, if you didn't know, that the 8v 750 had straight cut gears so they sound a little "whiney" compared to others..

The stator is oil colled and theres a big hole just around the connector gear between the starter and the starter clutch. in "THEORY" if a way was found to plug the oil journal from pumpingb oil oput on the floor, then yes you could start the bike with the kick starter...The stator cover acts as one half of the piloting holes for the connector gear axle, so youd have to start it with the kicker with the stator cover off.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
