Down from the top..I dont think the worm gear will fit thru the hole in the cover. You can try upwards. After relooking at the pic, that may be the way to get the shaft bearing out of the well as well. I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Yes..after relooking at the diagram..i thought there must be a shoulder in the cover that the bearing would have to seat against.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
