    Gear ratio

    Woo Hoo!

Just got back from a test ride of the replacement motor. I really miss that sound.

Is the gear ratio of the secondary drive or rear tire size different on the 1981 GS850G than on the 1980 GS850 L? It seems to be reving higher at 60 mph. I cant tell you the rpms as my tach cable is broken.

All my Harley freinds ask me how fast it goes. I tell them 85 mph cause thats as high as ht speedo goes.LOL!!

      Ed,

Where did that data come from? My 850GLT has a 17" rear, and others here have reported the same. I don't remember if the RPM at 70 are correct, and I wouldn't trust the speedo and tach for a 200 RPM difference anyway.

      Riklib,

The exhaust sound is different between G and GL models. Could this be what you interpret as sounding like higher revs?

Thanks for the data mine has a 17" rear also. I dont think its the exhaust I used the 1980 GS850L exhaust from my bike. I just put the$100.00 1981 GS850G motor in. I just sounds like its reving higher at 60 MPH. Maybe I just got used to riding my wife's Harley 1200 custom lugger. LOL. Just didn't know if the tire size or second drive was different.

Sorry, posted the old version of the chart. I have a new version but can't access photobucket from work. I'll update later tonight...

              Ok ? I think? Now I'm confused. itsays 79-82 has a 0.961 5th gear ratio with 17 in. tire.
Then it says 81-82 has a0.923 5th gear ratio with a 16 inch tire.
So I guess I should be asking how do you tell the differnce between a GLT, GLX or GLZ

My Bike is an 80 L I think the motor came out of an 81 G .

So I have (or had) a 17 in tire with a 0.961 5th gear ratio
The 1 I got may have the 0.923 5th gear ratio that ran a 16 in tire

So now I got a 17 inch tire with a 0.923 5th gear raio. This would make it rev higher in 5th gear?

.923 has a higher overdrive than .961, so lower revs, not higher.
