    Square O Ring

Ok, there is a "square" o ring that goes under the cylinder head gasket on my 1980 GS1000G.

Its between the head gasket and the block around the cam chain tunnel.

Is this necessary and why is it so damned expensive, like 20 bucks.

    Anyone try to make one?

    Cheers

The new style MLS head gaskets make that O-ring obsolete. If your gasket covers the O-ring groove, I think that means you don't need the O-ring.

I believe Ed is correct. The original "O" ring was situated within a cutout in the head gasket so the head gasket was not sitting on or pressing down on the "O" ring. As Ed said if your new head gasket covers the groove for the "O" ring then it does not need an "O" ring. Just clamp it down with the head gasket in place.
