The felt-like stuff lining the inside of the countershaft sprocket cover - does anyone know its true purpose other than collecting greasy globs of chain lube and dirt? The only purpose for this thing that I can think of is that it might be some sort of insulation for sound-deadening purposes. Is the countershaft sprocket and chain really that noisy? I currently have the cover off of the blue beast for a new sprocket. Was thinking about removing the "felt" (or whatever it is) to make it easier to clean the inside of the cover up. Anyone have any thoughts or experience taking the "felt" out? Thanks!

The foam will stop a sprocket from slipping off the splines.
Or at least it does \ has for me when some fool did not sufficiently torque the nut.Comment

Yes, just dig it out with a screw driver. If you want to get this cover chrome plated most shops will require that you remove it because it will hold the chemicals like a sponge.Comment

It has to be in there for sound deadening. Is the sprocket and chain really that loud that it has to be specifically quieted with sound deadening material?
I'm probably just going to take it out and see how it goes. Besides, its not like the blue beast is Goldwing like quiet - it has a Kerker with a comp baffle in it so I doubt I would hear anything coming from the sprocket cover anyway!
