    Clutch rattle '82 1100EZ

    Ok, gentlemen...

82 EZ, 80K+ miles with original basket. Standard clutch rattle when in neutral which goes away when I pull in the clutch. No noise while in gear. I pulled things apart to put in FastbyGast clutch plates since the Barnetts made for a ridiculously heavy clutch.

Since the clutch had the rattle, I decided to yank the inner basket and check things out. Everything really looked good.. No galling on any parts anywhere...no indication of anything being "loose".

HOWEVER, on the back of the primary, where the 3 sets of springs (one thinner bodied spring, one with thicker spring coils) are located, every one of the thicker coils springs is compressed and rattling around in its recess. I take it this is the cause of the basket rattle?

If so, what do you recommend? Gorilla modified clutch hub from APE? Any less expensive (but still effective) options for my beloved Ole Girl? I CANNOT weld, so the DIY kit from APE wouldn't do me any good.

As stated, everything looks really good...rivets are SOLID. (Although I did buy new bearings and some spacers, just for giggles.)

Somewhere here (do a search) there is a thread that addresses this issue with washers on the end of the springs that act as spacers to take up the rattle.

Theres a thing on Cliff's site for "stretching" those springs. I did it during my rebuild, they were loose. Haven't heard it since. Only been bout 2000 miles though. APE setup was a little too steep($) for me

I saw the link on Cliff's site, and I'm going to do that. When money is a bit better, I'll spring for the APE set up

I always keep an eye out on eBay hoping to snag a heavy duty basket for a deal. Another option is the current eBay Item # 110347619477 sold by ebay seller vansantperformance. In the description they say they will weld it up for a fee if you send them a usable clutch basket. You can also pick up a brand new OEM unit from boulevard for $215.45
That being said, I am going to opt for the bikecliff option for now since money is tight coming into the home stretch of my project.
