    Secondary Drive Removal

Hi all, I'm hoping I can find a solution to a problem that will save me from splitting my engine - can anyone help?

Is there any way of slipping the secondary drive out the back of the engine without splitting the engine? The thread is damaged and won't take a nut anymore.

I've removed the four bolts and loosened the bolts that hold the two halves of the engine together above the secondary drive. I've also tried removing the left hand bevel but that doesn't want to shift either.

Haynes manual is very sketchy in detail on how to do this, as per usual I'm out of my depth and gone beyond the point of no return.

Any tips on how to get the bevel gear out would be very gratefully received.

Loosening the case bolts on either side of the drive will relieve enough pressure to slide the gear out.
The drive unit is rather deep in there, so any cocking sideways will jam it in place.
Do your best to pry it out as straight as possible, it will come out.
If I remember correctly, the side gear has to come out first.

IT IS a very tight fit. It can be done in the frame... It just takes some persuasion And some big pry bars. Look on Basecliff's site for the secondary stud repair. Remove the swing arm and related to start..

I'd try to get side mating gear out first- ever seen a plumbers chain strap wrench- loop around housing and see if you get the housing to twist a bit to break stucktion.

Thanks for all the replies, that's good to know it is possible, will have another go at it this evening and will report back on progress!

          Cheers!

Problem solved, managed to start the nut onto the thread with a hammer and then it went on ok, so no need to remove the bevels!

            Onto the next cock-up!
