    Interchanging drive joint

I have a 1982 Suzuki GS1100gk that recently broke down due to worn worn down splines on the drive joint and lost its rear wheel engagement function. My question is this, Do I have to replace the gs1100's drive joint with its matching part or can I use the joint from say a 650gs, or an 850, which I can find on ebay for cheaper than the cycle shops $179 part?

You are talking about splines in rear wheel assembly? The 650 stuff won't work. Try a search as lots of posts on this subject. Take a pic of worn part if possible to aid folks pronouncing judgement.

Rear wheel splines do fail, normally spline replacement is all that is required. Lot's of posts on the subject here, parts are available, both used and OEM. Not a big deal and about a two and a half hour job.

      Cheers
