Takes ~30 min to start from cold, wont stay on with no choke.

This bike is a nightmare, it has good days and bad days, when I do eventually get it running. I just rebuilt the petcock, and it ran alright just before I did that.

After installing petcock, it took dang close to 30min to barely start (like every time) while cold. For a little while the valves (cams) sounded like loose change bouncing around, then it quiets down to normal. Also, the rpms go up, they go down. The bike dies when turning off the choke, sometimes it doesnt. Thats the major areas.

It has good days and bad days, when I do eventually get it running.

On a side note: I need to put in the intake boot o-rings, and the valves havent been adjusted. Is this the culprit or what? This is a mess, but any ideas?

You have hit two of the major areas; the valves and the intake boots. You need to fix these before proceeding.

GoBlue, you have a lot of wrenching to do to cure your problems (notice I said PROBLEMS)

Valve adjust, carb clean, new boots, points and condensors, whatever it needs

Big things dealing with poor starting.

                1... too much air
                2... too much fuel
3... not enough spark (or mis-timed spark)
                4... not enough compression
                5... all of the above

You have a lot of parts to take off and clean sir, and even more parts to replace.

Floats could be too high, jets can be plugged, o rings missing or damaged, boots cracked, rings bad, head gasket failure, crap coils, points welded together, bad condensers, bad timing advance cam, fouled plugs, bad grounds, dead battery, battery shorted, solenoid shorted, bad gas, bad fuel line, bad petcock, clogged fuel vent, shotty wiring, blown fuse, worn starter brushes, cam chain, cam timing...

Also, your rear brake anti-freeze and wheel bearing push rods could be screwed up.

                Or... OR...

Believe us when we tell you that THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS.

Hard starting problems are primarily related to valve adjustment and clean, properly-adjusted carbs.

Virtually all of my GSes (there are five of them ) will start virtually instantly and can be ridden within one minute of hitting the starter button.

The longest it should take to be ready to ride is the amount of time it takes to put your helmet and gloves on after starting it.

Or at least that's what it takes for mine and really, I already have my helmet on when I start it and shut the choke off by the time I put my glasses and gloves on.
