Motorcycle in gear but not in gear!?

I don't know if anyone else out there has any ideas to where to start on a problem I'm having with my 1977 gs750. I just replaced the sprockets on it and right now the bike will change gears indicated by the shift display but there is no power going to the wheels if I try and accelerate. Also the kickstart use to be strong yesterday and now it feels weak (doesn't take much to kick it) and I can't start the bike with the kick start nothing happens. I can start the bike just fine with the electric start though and no struggle at all. I pulled on the clutch cable and that feels good too like it use to. Another thing I have done recently is an oil change and I may have added a little to much if that would make a difference and I used 10w-40. Things just are not adding up for me right now. Any suggestions or advice would be great.

sounds like your clutch needs adjusting? I ran the clutch adjusting screw in too much one time, or was it out, can't remember. Anyway the same exact thing happened on my bike. It was in gear but wouldn't move, the kick didn't "take". Adjusting the clutch sorted it out

So it sorta goes, but slips? you sure you got front sprocket engaged in drive spline?

When you put the sprocket cover back on I bet you got something installed wrong with the clutch pushrod mechanism.

Thanks guys! The sprocket was fine but the clutch push rod was not all the way in when I put the cover back on. Both the gear shifts plus power to the wheel work now and the kickstart is working again.

I was waiting for your call back last night.. I was gonna ask if the cover gave you any fits when you put it back on. You said you didnt unhook the actuator, so i thought maybe the pushrod wasnt in all the way. Glad you got it sorted though. Strange that you got the cover fully on without the rod seated right though. Did you happen to notice the cover sitting off the tranny case just a little bit???

Yeah actually I noticed later on that I was missing the bottom rubber spacer when I took the cover off. It fell off when I was putting the cover back on and found it on the ground later the next day. Its amazing how so much the little things make such a huge difference.

Yes it does...probably let the cover go in just a little too far and had pressure on the push rod making the clutch slip and not turn the wheel.
