Cofirmation of valve adjustments for 83/750 please.

Yesterday I undertook a valve adjustment on the 750 and I've run into a snag. My factory manual appears to be incorrect showing adjustments with C position (cam notches facing out) to be intake and exhaust on 1, intake on 2 and exhaust on 3. With position D (notches facing inward) to be exhaust on 2, intake on 3 and intake and exhaust on 4.

The PO had made alterations to the photo changing the positioning of exhaust and intake on cylinder 2 and 3 i.e. intake on 2 to be at position D rather than C, exhaust on 2 to be position C rather than D, intake3 to be position C rather than D and exhaust to be D instead of C. I found this strange as there was no explanantion but checking against my 550 manual, the altered positioning agrees with it.

As I had completed the 550 some weeks ago and it runs fine I decided to follow the altered positioning.

I didn't get a chance to test it yesterday when completed but did this morning and I now have a very loud ticking that was not present before. All of the valves had been tight and I adjusted them to.12mm which is in range.

Obviously, I am going to have to redo them but I'm now a bit confused as to what positining I should be following.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated as I have the 750 for sale and people coming to view it this week.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cut and paste from tutorial...

With the camshaft notches pointed outward we can check clearances on the following valves:
#1 cylinder both the intake and exhaust side valves
#2 cylinder exhaust side valves only
#3 cylinder intake side valves only

After finishing the adjustment on all the valves available (8 total) with the camshaft notches pointed out, turn the engine using the 19mm bolt under the ignition cover so that both the notches are pointed in. With the notches pointing in toward each other you will be able to check and adjust the clearances on the following valves:

#2 cylinder intake side valves only
#3 cylinder exhaust side valves only
#4 cylinder both intake and exhaust side valves

    To measure is to know.

Thank you Ed. that is as the PO had diagramed it in the manual and how I did it. I wonder how I have come up with that loud ticking. I must have set them too loose perhaps? I should have left them alone as the bike seemed to run fine anyway.

I'm trying to sell this bike now and I won't be able to move it with that racket. Damn its annoying to have to redo it.

I am not sure, but this sounds wrong. I can photocopy and send you the pages from the factory manual if you like. It is in translated Japanese....so it's a bit weird, but if you know how the engine works, it's good.

Thanks guys. I double checked them again and they were set correctly according to the info Ed provided which was how the PO had amended the diagram in the manual. The manual was definitely wrong. The ticking I had heard must have been a loose wire as it never returned after I buttoned it up this last time.

          Sounds and starts fine now.

          Cheers,
