    1980 850 motor in a 1978 750 frame

    As the title suggests, I am thinking of a motor swap. I have access to a complete 1980 gs850 for dirt cheap and am thinking about getting it and swapping the motor into my 1978 gs750, will the motor mounts line up correctly? And is there any screwy wiring issues I may encounter? Thanks in advance.

    The 850 is a shafty and the 750 chain drive, right? What you need is a 1000 or 1100 chain drive engine if you want to do a swap.

      Not sure if you would have motor mount issues or wiring problems, but those are very minor, compared to what kawfeedave pointed out:

      The 850 is a shaft-drive engine, the 750 is a chain-drive. The frame is different, the swingarm is different.

      Probably more fabrication than you want to get involved with for a simple engine swap.

      What's wrong with the 750 engine? If it's running OK, I don't think you will get that much more by putting in the 850.
      If you want to enhance performance a bit, you can take the 850 pistons, cylinders, head and carbs and put them on the 750 crankcase.
      That swap is done often enough, but you need to ensure that the bottom end of the 750 is good, as well as the top end of the 850.

          Remind me which model years of 850 top end can swap onto the 8-valve 750 engine? The 850 seems to keep the 8-valve top for a few years after the 750 went 16 valve, but can you use those later 850 jugs/head on the earlier 750?

          Not that I am shopping for anything . . .
