    8 valve or 16 valve

I have A 1983 GS1100GL, do I have A 8 valve or A 16 valve engine. The reason that I want to know is that before I tear the motor down to adjust the valves is that I need the bike everyday.I also want to read up on what type of valve adjustment is needed for my bike. Please help thank you.

If the cam caps are round, it's an 8 valve.

If they are rectangular, it's a 16 valve.

    Yours should be round.

EDIT : Here's a pic of my GK, an 8 valve engine.

Your cam end covers should be round, meaning you have an 8-valve engine.

      Do they look like this?

You will need shims to adjust your valves. I would recommend opening up the top of the engine to check your clearances, then inventory your shims to see what you have. Order the shims that you need, and a gasket. If you order from Z1, as most of us do for shims, you will have them in just a few days.

For procedure, BassCliff, our resident librarian, has everything you will need.

I would also suggest that you take advantage of the invite in my sig.

I wish my engine looked like that, too.

            That is my wife's bike.

You can click on the links in my sig to see most of the herd.

(I am trying to get the rest of them pictured, too, but there is a character limit for the sig.)
