850 alternate piston rings source
I just got my head and cylinders back from my machinist. I mentioned to him the high price of rings so he crossed referenced the sizes and came up with a set of four for $40. Part numbers to follow.Tags: None

It would be super cool if your shop guy comes up with some low cost rings.
According to the factory Suzuki service manual
Piston diameter = 69.0 mm (2.7165"-2.7171")
Ring thickness:
- 1st & 2nd = 1.175-1.190 mm (.0463"-.0469")
No ring spec for oil control ring, but the piston groove is 2.51mm-2.53mm wide.Ed

He says that Hastings 2C5273 for a (get this) Daewoo 995 are a direct fit, the only thing we couldn't check online was the land/groove clerance. At $36 for a set of four Its worth a try.

The 850 manual says that the Cylinder Bore is 69.00 mm, and the piston diameter is 68.94mm - 68.96mm.
When they list the OD for these rings, is that measurement open or closed for the ring? Not an engineer and math is hard (Barbie tells me), but if the 68.5mm spec is a closed ring, maybe the end gap brings the ring closer to spec. Of course, the 0.1mm - 0.3mm ring gap might not close the distance between 68.5mm and 69.
Ow, my head hurts from all this math. I really want to believe in $40 set of rings instead of $125.

I would assume the machinist is looking at .50mm oversize Daewoo rings.
The widths at 1.2,1.2,2.5 are nominal and I would expect the groove cearances to be within Suzuki specs.
My own experiences using aftermarket car rings have been very good. Prices are invariably way better than bike OE, and quality is at least as good.

BassCliff
Hi,
I also may be in the market for a set of rings for my top end refresh, if I ever get around to it.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

I ended up using my old rings and did not go with Hastings. They do offer rings by size in their catalogue. Sorry for the delay in posting.
