Idle rpm. Is this normal?

    Idle rpm. Is this normal?

    Hey guys...

    bike settles in at around 1100rpm or so after i start her up and she settles.

    But after the bike gets warm and i have spent a bit of time riding the idle raises up to around 1500rpm-1600.

    Is this normal? is this something that should concern me at all?

    Idle RPM should be set on a warmed up engine. If its set on a bike thats just been started, then yes the RPMS will climb as the cylinders create heat and the gas is burned more efficiently..makes sense??

      Thats what the enrichment curcuit ( choke ) does...keeps enough gas into the cold cylinders till they heat up well enough so the bike idles without it and the throttle resp0nse is there...warmed engine functions optimally at that point. Start the bike and meter back the choke to about 1500 to 2000 for a few minutes till she warms up well, choke off, ride.

        Vacuum leaks can cause the idle to increase when warm.

          yes it does..maybe we should also ask if he has replaced the intake manifold orings...Hey brother!! Have you replaced the intake manifold orings????

              nope haven't done any of those things yet.
              Haven't had the bike for too long... only done a few minor things. haven't pulled apart the carbs or engine or anything.

              Just wondering if i need to target any focus on certain areas. So vacuum leaks hey... delightful

                I'd attempt setting the idle warmed up first off and see how it goes, could be just adjusted wrong which is certainly an easier fix than vacuum leaks... but of course if it comes back then it's vacuum leaks

                I did however fall into the trap of not adjusting my idle properly after the rebuild... I *thought* I had her warmed up enough to adjust it correctly, but a km up the road on the way to get her registered I had to pull over and wind the idle knob out as she was idling at about 4K RPM... after that it was all good...

                  I had the same problem. Pulled it apart and found this pretty picture.

                  Turned that into this.

                  Idles nice and smooth now...

                      New green dish scrubbie wrapped around it and some twisting of the hand should polish them real quick..nothing special needed. Or maybe some 000 steel wool

                            Make sure you don't send anything down your intake ports. A rag shoved in there works well.
