    Is this Oil Cooler Factory ?

    Is this oil cooler something the previous owner installed or was it factory back in 82?

        Yup that's a Derale.
        They work ok but you have to keep an eye on those rubber hoses. To say heat can be an issue is an understatement.
        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

              thanks for all the replies.. Well I did inspect the hoses and they look fine.. Do you guys think the oil cooler is not necessary? After I did an oil change I warmed it up and took it for a ride, does that thing every pull strong.. LOL I was surprised.. I did notice the engine was very hot to touch which is normal for a 4 stroke air cooled... I have to get my oil temp gauge working so I can see the temps...

                These engines were designed to run that kind of heat without a cooler. I think a cooler is a bit overkill unless you are running these things super hard. You might need that gauge to make sure your oil doesn't get too cool in the colder months as long as it is on there.

                  I would keep it, but make stainless steel lines to replace the rubber hoses.
                  Cooler is not required, but not a bad thing. I put one on my GS and the temps dropped 80-100 F.
                  You can also cover it during the winter months (watch 18 wheelers).

                    I don't run one. Firstly, it can block airflow to the engine if placed poorly and second, as stated before, these engines were designed to run without a cooler. Just change the oil every 2000 miles as called for.

                      Suzuki added oil coolers on most of the later generation GS's so I think they felt the oil temps were too high under some situations. Of course, these bikes have a thermostat built into the system too. Personally, I think they are a good idea, but mostly in really hot weather, and mostly when traffic slows down and there isn't much air flowing over the engine. If you add one I suggest working out how to add a thermostat to the system.
