    78 GS1000 not shifting

I took off the stator cover and tried to pull the cover next to it. Two washers came out. Where would they come from?
Now it shifted up to 5th gear and would down shift. What the heck is going on here?

The 2 washers most likely came off the starter gear..should be one on each side of the gear to protect the engine case and the stator cover from getting chewed up.

How did you upshift...riding or engine off and clicking it up? Once you put the washers back on each side of the gear and get it buttoned back up, start the bike WITH THE CLUTCH PULLED IN and downshift the bike while just barely slipping the clutch so the shifting drum will ratchet back down thru the gears.

Yea those washers came off the starter gear. Just be careful when putting them back on.
