    top end gaskets

What tools would I need and how hard would it be to replace all the gaskets from the gearbox up?

I have an 82 GS850G. It seams to start and run good cold, but after an hour or so of normal running (hwy and town) it will start to smoke something feirce. The front side of the motor is pretty dirty and it looks like their is an oil leak around the exhaust pipe. I am guessing the gaskets need to be changed.

Is this something I can do having never done it before?

    Thanks!
    Kimo

Here is the header? gasket. The rest of the front looks the same.

    Thanks!

Have you replaced the tach drive seals yet?

Best to verify the source of the leak before you go tearing down the engine. Might be an easy fix like the valve cover gasket. How long since you adjusted the valves and replaced the gasket?

i have had the bike about 3 weeks, and only thing done was exhaust gaskets replaced and adjusted the carbs. It was a simple adjust, not a complete tear down.

So to answer the questions, no i have done neither of those.

I will say though, the gaskets does seam to bubble or boil right where i took the picture. When running i see smoke coming from a lot of places, but they are all in that area of the photo. Also after getting the engine warmed up the idle goes from 1000 to about 3000. That is the time it smokes the most as well.

The increasing idle is a vacuum leak. Check my signature and look at the Newbie Mistakes thread for more info.
