front sprocket whine in 3rd gear only!

Hi all. Don't know if anyone has experienced this, but here goes. 1981 suzuki gs650e all stock 25k miles in very good shape. Bought bike a year ago without the problem. At some point it devoloped a fairly loud whine. It's coming from the front sprocket area, as far as I can tell, when riding at slow to medium speeds. It dissipates at higher speeds. It is only there in 3rd gear. All other gears are smooth and whisper quiet. I changed the front to a suzuki oem 15t sprocket and replaced the chain with aftermarket one (non o-ring) lubricate generously with maxima chain lube with no improvement. The rear sprocket is still the original in good shape. I've adusted the chain on center stand and also the side stand many times. Loose/tight it doesn't matter, still the noise. I'm hoping it's not the transmission. The noise defintely comes from left side of engine where the chain and sprocket are. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Might be the gear itself and the noise is resignating down the shaft and your hearing it from under the cover.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
