Recommended clutch replacement? I have no 'friction' zone.

    Hi,

Went up to Duluth for a little camping trip with my Dad this weekend and we got stuck in a little stop and go traffic. Letting go of the clutch about half way (or so) to use the friction zone to go a few feet while in traffic makes the WORST sound. The best way to describe it is trying to start from a stop while in 3rd gear. It sounds exceedingly worse sound when it gets hotter. Time to replace the clutch? It drives fine otherwise.

I found some on eBay, but just wondering if there's a forum favorite. Hopefully it's not too expensive.

    Thanks!

    Kevin

PS. I ended up driving past all the cars in traffic on the shoulder haha. It was getting too hot, fun stuff!

The 82 GS1100G ? put in your signature to attract attention. Did you start with oil at full? Bunch of posts about rivets and backing plates that need attention with noisy clutch. Is it a rattle sound?

      Yes, it's a GS1100G. Sorry, I forgot to mention.

Oil is full, and fresh (within couple hundred miles). Yes, it does sound a bit rattle like.

I tried searching, but wasn't exactly sure what to search for.

      Thanks,

      Kevin

What about the clutch hub nut? I have no personal experience in this area, but I have heard it could be an issue as well.

Get a gasket first...then pull the cover. Might as well round up an impact gun and a 32mm socket (?). If the nut happens to be stripped you can get an APE nut.

If you lean it on the side stand you don't even need to drain the oil.

Had to put an APE clutch hub nut on my '82 GS1100GK recently. PO had retorted the original, but it loosened right up again. They were made of too soft a steel. & would deformed & loosen without even turning. An easy find. Pull the clutch cover, springs & pressure plate, bend back the locking washer on the hub nut. If the nut loosen without torque, buy one of APE's & replace it.
