    1981 GS1100E Stock engine : Normal cam/valve sound? Ding , ding, ding.....

    Hello,

I never payed attention to the noise my cams made before doing valve adjusting. Now while I was synchronizing the carbs I noticed the sound.
It's not a ping or knock, mind you I never hired a ping or knock which I think would be an alarming sound, it's ding ding ding... like one would a spoon on a ceramic, marble counter. I'm sure it's the valves and cam but I just want to make sure it is a normal sound.

    So is it normal?

Would adding a top oiler help reduce that noise?

    Thank you.

I would think properly adjusted vavles would cure it,what size gauge did u use?and was it metric or standard?they are different.
No it isn't normal,a minor faint tick is ok,over time it will tighten up,better than clanking a marble counter and better than burning up your valves.IMHO

Is it "normal?" Verbal descriptions of sounds are so subjective it's hard to tell. To me "normal" valve train noise is "rapid metallic clicking - kind of like a sewing machine noise" if you will.

Perhaps trying to capture the sound with a short video/audio link and then posting it might be better than trying to verbally describe the sound?

I went through them 3 time to make sure they all hade the same drag.

          in 0.07mm/0.003in
          out 0.12mm/0.005in

          Yes more like that.

I'll have to hang around other GS riders and compair.
