Ape Nut in here, scroll down. I'm not 100% sure it will fit a 1000.

Brilliant tips thank you, I usually end up buying my GS parts from the US due to lack of availability here in the UK. Will certainly give Robinsons Foundry a try. Just for info I contacted Ape and unfortunately they don,t do the HD clutch nut for the GS1000E 1980 model so I will have to give the original stock nut ago when I get the rebuilt clutch back.

Just while I am waiting for the rebuilt clutch to comeback I though I would just checkout the rota/starter clutch assembly. I am not sure if there should be any movement in the starter clutch ring but I can move it laterally a millimetre, have included two short videos (video 1 and video 2 )for you to see and would appreciate your advice if this movement is okay

I've got one of their HD clutch nuts on my 80 GS1000E.

UM! very odd, here is APE's reply

"I don't think the nut we make for the GS1100 will fit your bike. Sorry.

The OEM part number for the nut you need shows it only fits the shaft drive model of the GS1100 which we know is different from the chain drive model. "

Check out the parts cross reference for the OEM clutch nut:

If it fits on a GS1100E, then it fits on your bike. And mine, since I already have one.

I think I'd ask them what size and thread pitch it is

That being said, I just bought an OEM nut back in 1982 when I had my clutch hub done. It hasn't failed since, so this may be an easier route for you
