sealer or not? cam grommets-1/2 moons..
Anybody work alot on these older GS's (1979) and installed alot of these-New Ones-that's what I got, I'm wondering if they're installed dry or should I apply a light coat of rtv sealer to them (outer surface to head)? TIA Of course the manual doesn't even mention them..Tags: None

There is lots of mention on this subject in the archives in older threads. Consensus is to use something like 3bond 1194 on the curved portion of the half moons and set them wet, then install the cam cover. Some people like to set them in backwards so they can't pop out due to crankcase pressure.Ed

Use the search feature on this one. Lots of installation info on the moons. Some put flange in, some out. Various sealants too. Lots has been discussed about these. Read up and you can see all the past answers to this question and see what feels right to you.

Crankthat
Have just been reading up on this too.
Careful on torque of cover bolts seems people have problems using factory torque specs and a lot strip out, or break bolts.

I think we had covered that in the other thread you had going..in fact I was the one that brought up the Three Bond and turning the half moons around so the rim is on the inside of the lip.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Seems to me that if you have ANY "crankcase pressure", spitting out the half-moons would be the least of your problems.

Steel Toed Tank
I installed mine (16 valve) flange OUT with black RTV on the curve.
No leaks or issues, and I am often riding at 5,000-10,000 RPMs and spend 95% of my ride time at 100km/h or more.

If the top of the half moon does not protrude slightly above the gasket surface they should be replaced. I used Permatex 97 on mine, flange in.
Considering how cheap they are it's worth having a set on hand when you go in there.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need
