    Re-assembling 1980 850L; have a question....

I am re-assembing the tranny and I have the shifter installed correctly....or so I think. I turn the key on and can shift into 1st and back into Neutral fine. However, I cannot shift into 2nd, 3rd, etc. The shift lever moves up fine, as if it SHOULD shift though.

Is it not shifting just because the motor is not running? I still have the carbs and some odds/ends to get back on yet. I haven't had this bike very long, so I don't know too terribly much about it. Any help would be great, thx!!!

Try turning the counter shaft between shifts. Easier if the clutch isn't on yet. The shafts need to rotate to shift.

Life is too short to ride an L.

It is also possible to try what tkent was suggesting by moving the rear wheel just a bit to see if it will then shift gears.
