gs1000g cylinder

I have read most of the posts, but could still use a more specific opinion.
Will a 79 gs1000 cylinder fit a 80 gs1000g. I have observed that the flange for the bolt in front of the cam chain section is present on this particular 79 cylinder (drilled to bolt up through to head), but is this the only criteria? Also, is there a difference in the "L" vs. "G".

Hi Mr. george g,

In general, one of the easiest ways to see if parts are transferable between models is to check the part numbers or use a cross-reference. You'll find a procedure on my little website. It won't give you the whole story but will give you an idea of the cross-fitment possibilities.

For example, it seems the piston for the '79 GS1000 is part# 12111-49000 and also fits the '78, but that's all that's listed for cross reference at alpha-sport.com. The part number for the 1980 GS1000G piston is 12111-49001, which is very similar. Sometimes Suzuki will change a part number just because of the color or other minor differences but will still be functionally the same.

For the cylinders, the '79 part number is 11210-49001 and that's for '79 only. The 1980 part number is 11210-49002.

All that to say, "I don't know" if it will work for you or not. But I don't see why you can't take the cylinders and head from the 1980 and put it on your '79. They are both 2-valve engines.

BTW, the "G" means "shaft drive" and "L" means "cruiser" model with stepped seat, chrome fenders, buckhorn style pull-back handlebars, etc. Have a look at the gallery off the main page to see all the different models. Click the 'model information' link to see the model designations.

Will a 79 gs1000 cylinder fit a 80 gs1000g. ... Also, is there a difference in the "L" vs. "G".

The '79 GS1000 came in three "flavors", E, L and S.
They were all chain-driven.
The E is the "standard" bike.
The L is the "cruiser" bike.
The S is the "Cooley replica" or "Sport" bike.

The '80 GS1000G (apparently yours?) is a shaft-driven bike.
It was available in two "flavors", G and GL (but the side covers only said "L").
Like the E, the G is the "standard" bike.
Like the L, the GL is the "cruiser" bike.

Like BassCliff, I don't know whether the '79 cylinders from a chain-drive engine will fit your '80 shafty.

As long as the bolt flange is in the front, the cylinders are the same.

Nessism, I 've been strongly inclined to think that the front bolt flange was going to be key to highway. I'm going to buy the one in question.

I restored (kinda half assed) my first bike in 1968. Wish we had the internet forums then. What a difference!
