    What u find inside

Pulled the head off my gs750l to investigate why she only running on two and had lower comp.on badly running pair ,suspected head gasket but all looks ok,lapped the valves in lightly. Was good opportunity to check PO claim its fitted with yoshi 850 pistons.
Found that 5 out of the 8 valve shims are only 29mm not 29.5 and are a rattly fit in the bucket. Will have to reassemble with existing shims to get clearances sorted before reshuffling and replacing with correct dia and size ones
Suspect that the shims on exhaust are a little big so will increase clearances to the max on the exhaust have replacements ground to give required clearances.
No wonder the PO did not want to talk much about the top end job he had done on it.Bit of a pain as i live rurally and poor old gs only transport but thats what u get for buying a cheap and old japanese bike ,u gotta laugh

Sorry a PO lied to you. I'd be more willing to blame them than the bike, though. For a little money and some neglected maintenance, you should have an inexpensive bike that will run for a very long time.

Agreed, it's the POs fault, not the bike's. Good luck with your repairs

My 1980 750L has a 16 valve head with tappets, there are no shims. You sure yours isn't pre-1980?

Yeah, if it is an 8 valve L model then it is a 1979 GS750L chain drive. A one year model. You can use the Kaw shims to calculate what thickness Suz shims you need to purchase to replace them. In the meantime, since they are shim over bucket, take it easy and don't over rev the engine. You don't want to be spitting those shims out and cause some real issues.

Sounds like you might have pulled the head for nothing. It's always best to check the valves before assuming the worst. You would have caught the shim mess up then. Most likely the valves are too tight.

Now that the head is off it's strongly recommended to pull the cylinder if you haven't already done so, and replace the base gasket now that the clamp load is released. OEM Suzuki gaskets are far superior to aftermarket gaskets so consider that before buying some cheap aftermarket gasket kit which is likely to leak.

Hey thanks for the advice guys forgot to check the keep me informed box.Gasket sets on its way across the pacific. Not gonna do anything to flash this time round ,exhaust guides bit worn and valve tips need a few thou off them to get them back into common shim size range .Three shims ,29mm ones fitted are marked Y2.05 (.081" by my micrometer) but will get it back together before finding and getting shims ground.Already got 2 in at the toolmaker being sized down so will fetch those as well .
Bit of a pain being 1/2 a world away from the shim club but met a young guy working in motorycleworkshop in the city with a stack of them, just need to grab one more and hopefully have enough to reapproach the toolmaker with cap in hand.
Agree it was a mistake to remove the head but you know "fools rush in w...".Not blaming the bike at all shes been a reliable mount ,24000 km in 13 months shes my carpenters ute, apart from chain, steering head/swing arm, brakes, bearings alternator reg/ rec (still not charging properly) carbs and now shims shes been relatively costly to sort so far,Im too used to british stuff the parts are way cheaper and easier to get here in nz.Suzuki NZ never brought L's in 79/80 so this one was a to order or private import from aussie though registered new here as an 1980 model as stated on aussie compliance plate
Used the enforced holiday to do all those little things that need doing on her .Need to get 2nd line of transport happening so things dont grind to a halt when these situations arise. So been digging out an almost completed Triumph daytona project really only needs head back on, tyres, chains, and rubber wear and she should be all good to go.
                  Cheers again
